The right lubricant for a bike chain is a dedicated chain lube that suits your chain type (O-ring, X-ring or standard), applied only after the chain has been cleaned of old grime and dried. Spraying fresh lube over a dirty chain traps grit in the links and wears the chain and sprockets faster.
Why chains go dry, noisy and rusty
A motorcycle chain lives in the worst place on the bike: next to the rear tyre, in road dust, rain and splash. Old lube collects dirt and turns into a black paste. Rain washes lube out of the rollers. The result is a chain that is noisy, has stiff links and shows orange rust on the rollers, especially after the monsoon.
Degreaser for bike chain: the cleaning step
The cleaning step is the one most riders skip.
- Use a chain cleaner or degreaser that says it is safe for O-ring / X-ring chains if your bike has a sealed chain. Most modern motorcycles do. Aggressive solvents can harm the rubber rings that hold grease inside each link.
- Avoid petrol as a cleaner. It is a fire hazard and harsh on rubber.
- Avoid high-pressure water jets pointed straight at the chain; they can push water and dirt past the seals.
- Use a soft brush, work around the chain by rotating the rear wheel (engine off, bike on the main stand), then wipe it down with a clean cloth.
- Let it dry completely. Lube over a wet chain does not stick well.
Lubricant for bike chain: the lube step
We list Riders United PTFE Enhanced Chain Lubricant (SKU 5201) for this. Its page lists O-ring, X-ring and standard motorcycle drive chains, plus scooters with exposed chains, and states low fling-off and corrosion protection against moisture and dust.
How to apply, from the product directions:
- Clean the chain of dirt and old lube and let it dry.
- Shake the can thoroughly.
- Spray evenly along the inner side of the chain while slowly rotating the wheel.
- Let it set 10-15 minutes before riding, then wipe off the excess.
- Reapply every 300-600 km, more often in wet or dusty conditions.
The inner side matters because that is where the rollers meet the sprockets, and centrifugal force carries the lube outward through the links as you ride. Wiping off the excess matters because surplus lube on the outside only collects dust.
Choosing a chain lube
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|
| Dedicated chain lube spray | Regular chain care on most bikes | Check it is O-ring safe for sealed chains |
| Engine oil or gear oil | Emergency only | Flings off, attracts dust, stains wheels |
| Silicone spray | Pivots, cables, rubber parts | Not made for chain rollers under load |
| Penetrating spray | Freeing seized bolts | Too thin to stay on a chain as lube |
Keep lube where it belongs
- Keep chain lube off the tyre and the brake disc. Cover the disc with a cloth or spray from the side away from it.
- If lube does reach the disc, clean it with a dedicated brake cleaner such as Brake Shoe Cleaner (SKU 5600), with the brakes cool. See brake contamination.
Safety: chain cleaners and lubes are aerosols or solvents. Work outdoors or with good ventilation, engine off and cool, keep away from sparks and flames, never put fingers near the sprocket while turning the wheel, and follow the label and SDS.
When to ask an expert
- The chain is stretched, has tight spots that do not free up after cleaning and lube, or the sprocket teeth look hooked: chain and sprockets need replacing, usually as a set.
- The chain keeps going slack quickly after adjustment.
- You run a fleet of delivery two-wheelers and want a maintenance routine and bulk supply: send us the fleet size and riding conditions.

FAQ
Which is the best lubricant for a bike chain?
A dedicated chain lube that matches your chain type. For sealed chains, make sure it says O-ring / X-ring safe. Apply it only to a clean, dry chain.
What can I use as a degreaser for a bike chain?
A chain cleaner labelled safe for O-ring / X-ring chains. Avoid petrol, avoid aggressive solvents on sealed chains, and let the chain dry before lubing.
How often should I lube my bike chain?
The product we list says every 300-600 km, and more often in rain or dusty roads. After riding in heavy rain, clean and lube sooner.
Can I use engine oil on my bike chain?
In an emergency it is better than a dry chain, but it flings off and holds dust. Switch to a proper chain lube at the next clean.
