Brake dust, oil or grease on shoes, drums, discs and calipers reduce braking feel and cause noise. With the vehicle off and the brakes cool, clean them with a brake cleaner and let them dry fully before reassembly. Micron 5600 Brake Shoe Cleaner (Low VOC) is formulated to remove brake dust, oil, grease and dirt from brake components and evaporates quickly with minimal residue. Oil-soaked linings cannot be cleaned back to safe; they need replacing.

Why it happens

  • Brake dust build-up. Friction material wears into fine dust that collects in drums and on calipers.
  • Grease or oil leaks. A leaking wheel seal, hub grease or careless lubrication puts oil on friction surfaces.
  • Road grime. Water, mud and dirt get into brake assemblies, especially on commercial vehicles.

You will notice brake noise, reduced braking feel, or visible oil and dust on friction surfaces.

How to fix it

  • Brake shoes, drums, discs, calipers and related components: Micron 5600 Brake Shoe Cleaner (Low VOC). Its page says it is suitable for these parts and for automotive, commercial vehicle and workshop use.

Directions from the 5600 page:

  1. Make sure the vehicle is switched off and the brake components are cool.
  2. Shake the can well.
  3. Remove loose dirt and heavy deposits where needed.
  4. Hold the can about 15–25 cm from the surface and spray generously onto the component, letting the cleaner dissolve contaminants.
  5. Let it evaporate, or wipe with a clean, lint-free cloth if required. Repeat on heavily contaminated areas.
  6. Let the components dry completely before reassembly or returning the vehicle to service.

Find and fix the source of any oil before cleaning, or the contamination will come straight back.

A workshop routine that helps:

  • Keep brake cleaning separate from lubrication jobs, and keep lubricant sprays off the brake bench.
  • Use clean, lint-free cloths that have not been used with grease.
  • Clean both sides of an axle at the same time so braking stays even.
  • After reassembly, check the pedal or lever feel before the vehicle leaves the bay.

What to avoid

  • Clean only with the vehicle off and the brakes cool.
  • Test on painted, plastic and rubber surfaces first, as the 5600 page says.
  • Never spray lubricants (for example 4102 M.A.M.A or 4500 Silicon Spray) on brake friction surfaces.
  • 5600: treat it as flammable until the SDS says otherwise. Keep it away from sparks, flames and hot surfaces, and use it with ventilation.
  • Do not blow brake dust off with compressed air; it puts dust in the air you breathe.

When to ask an expert

Hand the vehicle to a qualified mechanic if:

  • linings are oil-soaked, since they need replacing, not cleaning;
  • a wheel cylinder, caliper seal or hub seal is leaking;
  • there is any loss of braking performance after cleaning.

Brakes are safety-critical. When in doubt, replace parts rather than clean them.

FAQ

Can brake cleaner fix oil-soaked brake shoes?

No. Cleaning removes surface contamination. Linings that have soaked up oil need replacing, and the leak must be fixed.

Is it safe on rubber brake parts and paint?

The 5600 page says to test compatibility before use on painted, plastic, rubber or other sensitive surfaces. Test on a small hidden area first.

Can I use contact cleaner or a multipurpose spray instead?

Use a product made for brakes. Multipurpose lubricant sprays must never go on friction surfaces.

How long before I can drive after cleaning?

The page says to let components dry completely before reassembly or returning the vehicle to service. Check that every surface is dry, and test the brakes at low speed before driving normally.
