What is Aluminum Hydroxide (ATH)?
Aluminum Hydroxide is the world's most widely used halogen-free flame retardant and smoke suppressant. It works by releasing water endothermically at ~220°C, cooling the polymer and diluting combustible gases while forming a protective alumina char layer.
How it works
Endothermic decomposition at ~220°C releases water vapor, absorbs heat, dilutes flammable gases, and forms a ceramic-like alumina barrier on the surface.
Applications
- PVC cable compounds
- XLPE insulation
- Rubber sheathing
- Thermoplastic polyolefins
- SMC/BMC composites
- Carpet backing
- Conveyor belts
Advantages
- +Lowest cost halogen-free FR
- +Excellent smoke suppression
- +Non-toxic decomposition products
- +Widely available in India
Limitations
- −High loading levels required
- −Reduces mechanical properties at high loading
- −Decomposition temp (220°C) limits processing options
