Silicone Spray Uses: Bike, Car Windows, and Where Not to Spray It

Great on rubber, plastic and sliding parts. A problem near paint, brakes and anything that must grip.

In short

  1. 01Silicone spray suits rubber seals, window channels, hinges, locks, rails and rollers.
  2. 02Keep silicone off brakes, anything that will be painted, glued or printed, and paint-prep areas.
  3. 03Clean the surface first, spray a light coat, and switch power off for electrical parts.
  4. 04Silicone is not a chain lube, and we do not recommend it on scooter drive belts unless the maker says so.

Silicone spray leaves a thin, slippery, water-repellent film, which makes it good for rubber seals, window channels, hinges, locks and plastic sliding parts. It is the wrong choice anywhere that must grip, be painted or be glued, because silicone residue is hard to remove and gets in the way of all three.

What silicone spray actually does

A silicone spray carries silicone oil in a propellant. Once sprayed, it leaves a film that reduces friction and repels water. A typical general-purpose example is M.A.M.A Silicon Spray (SKU 4500), which is described as odourless, colourless, non-staining and leaving a non-conductive film.

Silicone spray uses that make sense

From the listed uses of SKU 4500:

  • Car windows: power window tracks, sliding windows and sunroof channels.
  • Rubber beading and door seals that squeak, stick or drag.
  • Door hinges, door locks, seat rails and drawer sliders.
  • Workshop machines: conveyor belts, pulleys, rollers, treadmills and packing machines.
  • Battery terminals, as protection against corrosion after they have been cleaned.
  • Switches and sockets, only when the power is off.

For rubber that is going hard and brittle, a conditioning silicone such as Silicon Rubber Care Agent (SKU 1105) is listed to keep door, bonnet and hose seals from going brittle or sticking, and to stop rattles and squeaks where different materials rub.

If your power window is slow or your door seal squeaks, see squeaky seals and stiff power windows.

How to use it

  1. Shake well.
  2. Clean the surface of dirt, grease and moisture first. Silicone over grit just makes grinding paste.
  3. Hold the can upright 15-20 cm away and spray a light, even coat.
  4. For electrical parts, switch power off before spraying.
  5. Wipe off excess with a soft cloth.

Where NOT to use silicone spray

PlaceWhy to keep silicone off
Brake discs, drums, shoes and padsBrakes need friction. Any lubricant on them is dangerous.
Anything that will be painted or powder coatedSilicone residue is a well-known cause of paint defects and poor adhesion.
Surfaces to be glued, bonded or printedAdhesives and inks struggle to wet a silicone film.
Paint shop and paint-prep areasOverspray drifts and contaminates nearby work.
Powered electrical partsSwitch off first; spray only on dead equipment.
Tyres, footrests, grips, pedalsAnything you stand on or hold should not be slippery.

In a shop that paints, prints or bonds parts, keep silicone sprays in a separate area and use non-silicone alternatives near finishing work.

Silicone spray for bike and Ather belt

On a motorcycle or scooter, silicone spray is fine for cable ends, side-stand pivots, seat locks and rubber parts. It is not a chain lube: use a dedicated chain lubricant (see our dry, noisy chain guide).

Many people search for silicone spray for the Ather belt. Belt-drive scooters rely on the belt gripping the pulleys, so we do not recommend spraying silicone or any lubricant on a drive belt unless your scooter maker or service centre tells you to. A noisy or squeaking belt is often about tension, alignment, wear or debris, which is a service-centre job.

Safety: silicone spray is a pressurised aerosol. Use with ventilation, keep away from sparks, flames and hot surfaces, never spray on brakes, and follow the label and SDS.

When to ask an expert

  • The window motor or regulator has failed: that is a mechanic's job, not a lubrication one.
  • Your factory paints or bonds parts and you suspect silicone contamination: tell us what is being finished and we will help you choose non-silicone alternatives.
  • You are unsure whether a moving part is meant to be lubricated at all: check the maker's manual first.

FAQ

What are the main silicone spray uses?

Lubricating and protecting rubber seals, window channels, hinges, locks, seat rails, sliders, rollers and plastic parts, and repelling water from them.

Can I use silicone spray on car windows?

Yes, on the window tracks, channels and rubber beading, applied lightly after cleaning. Keep overspray off the glass, or wipe it off, so it does not smear.

Is silicone spray good for a bike chain?

No. Use a chain lubricant made for motorcycle chains. Silicone is fine for pivots, cables and rubber parts on the bike.

Can I spray silicone on the Ather belt?

We do not recommend it unless the manufacturer says so. A drive belt needs grip; get a noisy belt checked at the service centre.
