What is Magnesium Hydroxide (MDH)?
Magnesium Hydroxide is a halogen-free flame retardant with higher thermal stability than ATH. It decomposes at ~330°C, making it suitable for polymers processed at higher temperatures.
How it works
Endothermic decomposition at ~330°C releases water vapor, cooling the material and forming a protective magnesium oxide char layer.
Applications
- Halogen-free cable compounds
- Polypropylene
- Polyethylene
- Engineering thermoplastics
- EVA compounds
- EPDM rubber
Advantages
- +Higher processing temperature than ATH
- +Good for polyolefins
- +Smoke suppression
- +Environmentally friendly
Limitations
- −More expensive than ATH
- −High loading required
- −Can affect surface finish
